Introduction:

This novel 3-D Flow Chamber Device has the advantage of being the only in vitro technology that can combine physiological shear stress with chemokine gradients and local microenvironment. No similar technologies are currently available on the market. Previous methods such as the static or 2-D flow assays had no way of combining these three key parameters in one test. Translational applications of the 3-D device include mimicking tissue-specific vascular beds in vitro (e.g. combining brain-derived endothelial cells with astrocytes to model the blood-brain barrier under conditions of physiological shear stress), testing vascular permeability and the ability of drugs to cross over the vascular barrier, testing drug candidates that target cell migration and predicting the in vivo behavior of therapeutic cells after intravascular injection. Thus, the unique 3-D Flow Chamber Device is a versatile and inexpensive tool for various applications in different medical fields including drug development, stem cell biology, regenerative medicine, vascular biology, hematology, oncology, autoimmunity, and inflammation. The 3-D Device is also useful for translational science, and preclinical drug development, screening and delivery.
