Antibiotics -- Category List

Originally antibiotics were defined as being naturally produced products of fungal or bacterial metabolisms. Furthermore, substances are called antibiotics that do not occur naturally and are either produced synthetically or via genetic engineering. Appropriate antibiotics are used in human or veterinary medicine to fight bacterial infections or infections caused by protozoans. When treating livestock with antibiotics there are general bans or time periods that must be followed. The prophylactic use of antibiotics is becoming more restricted primarily to prevent the development of resistances. Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) as well as general bans for antibiotics in feed and food are stated in EU law.
